– The Anambra state police has said that it has recorded high murder cases for the past three months

– It blamed it on the activities of IPOB, MASSOB, Fulani herdsmen

– It urged the state to continue to support them

The police in Anambra have revealed that the activities of Fulani herdsmen, members of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation for a Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) have increased the number of murder cases in the state.

The herdsmen have been criticised lately for the violent attacks in the state while the two pro-Biafra groups have staged protests that have sometimes turned violent when accosted by policemen.

Vanguard reports that Mr. Hosea Karma who is the commissioner of police in the state disclosed this when he was visited by the members of the Anambra state House of Assembly committee on police affairs and security.

He disclosed that about 36 persons were gruesomely murdered in Anambra between January and April. Details showed that nine were murdered in January, five in February, 15 in March while seven had already been recorded in April.

He however said some of the murders were committed by the family members of the victim.

“These murders are giving us sleepless nights, especially as they started happening after we had arrested the problems of armed robbery, kidnapping and cult- related activities in this state. But we are not going to allow it to continue as our men are equal to the task.”

He said the Governor Willie Obiano was forced to set up a special committee which the police commissioner headed alongside personnel from the army, the Department of State Service and the civil defence as members following the increasing activities of herdsmen and he pro-Biafra groups.

Karma urged the lawmakers to assist the police as there were inadequate vehicles. He said the state had the least police manpower with only 50 drivers instead of 500.

Speaking specifically on IPOB and MASSOB, Karma reminded them that where their rights ended was where those of the police began.

He commended the lawmakers for passing a bill that will see assets acquired by kidnappers destroyed. He said it had helped to reduce crime in the state.

Mr. Victor Okoye who is the chairman of the committee said their visit was to work out a strong relationship between the House of Representatives and the police.
