Breaking: Enyimba survive titanic battle in Sousse

The sole Nigerian flag bearers at this season’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League Enyimba football club are through to the group stage of the competition.

Although the Nigerian league champions lost the second leg 3 – 0 in far away Sousse, Enyimba defeated the North African team 4 – 3 on penalties as the tie between the two ended 3 – 3 on aggregates.

The Tunisians opened the score-sheet in the 43rd minute from a freekick to give the North African team a life-line.

Etoile played with so much intensity from the first blast of the whistle with Enyimba playing with ‘ten defenders and one goal keeper’.

The hosts were rewarded with the second goal in the 61st minute and then made the score level fifteen minutes from time.

The Nigerians soaked all the pressure in the titanic battle as the second leg ended 3 – 0 in Sousse in favour of Etoile du Sahel.

The game went straight into penalty shootout. With both teams losing two of their spot kicks respectively, the epic battle went into sudden-death.

The Nigerian team were however lucky as the hosts lost a kick, with Enyimba making no mistake.

The feat means Enyimba are the first Nigerian team since 2012 to reach the group stage of the CAF champions league.
