Haunted Memories: Arsonist surrenders himself after murdering family of 5

Babatola killed his girlfriend, Janet and her family, after she had denied him of sex based on his alleged Hernia condition.

Oluwaseyi Babatola, a 26-year-old secondary school leaver has surrendered himself to the police after committing arson that killed a family of five on April 15, 2015, at Sabongari, Bwari, in the Federal Capital Territory.

Babatola confessed to the crime and mentioned that he has been haunted by the memories of the children that died in the inferno.

 

According to Punch, the arson was as a result of Babatola being denied sex by his girlfriend, identified as Janet.

The girlfriend told the suspect that his mother told her he has Hernia, due to this, she cannot have sex with him.

Babatola was thrown into a fury and made for the phone he bought for Janet from where it was being charged.

This met a resistance from the girlfriend who allegedly hit on the chest. Her cousin, Taphael, joined in and held down Babatola so she can beat him.

Babatola said, “Janet said my mother told her that I suffer from hernia, and that she could not date me; she called me a ‘mugu’ (fool), and said she had chopped my money."

"So, I went to where she was charging the phone I bought for her and took it."

“She attacked me and bit my chest, and as I struggled to free myself from her grip, her cousin, Taphael, came in and pushed me down and held me there while she beat me with her fists."

"After I left the house, Janet’s younger sister called me on the telephone and abused me, saying they would deal with me if I come to the house again.”

Babatola explained that after the incident, he went on to live with his friend who resides at Arab Road in Bwari.

While he was there, he received several phone calls from Janet's sister, who threatened that he will be beaten if he shows up at their residence.

It was after this that he went to commit the dastard act that has resulted in a mass killing.

“On the night of April 15, around 11pm, I went to the house and found that the gate was locked. I scaled the fence into the compound."

"I went towards Janet’s room and saw her sleeping, as the window was opened because there was no power supply."

"I went to the bathroom, where she kept a gallon of fuel and poured it into the room through the window; the room caught fire from a lighted lantern,”

Bothered by the evil act he had committed, he revealed that he headed to the bush to kill himself.

It was through the timely call of his brother that saved him from killing himself. The brother called to tell him that their house was on fire, which Babatola admitted to.

He told his brother that he was about to kill himself as a result, but he was persuaded to surrender himself to the police, which he did.

“I headed for the bush to hang myself, but my phone suddenly rang and my brother told me that our house just got burnt; I told him I did it and that I was about to commit suicide."

"He said I should not, and persuaded me to report to the police,”

The suspect stated that his target was Janet. Other members of her family that died in the incident were not part of his plan. Most especially, her children, who he said haunts him.

“I can’t get them off my mind, they haunt me every time; I thought it was only Janet that was in the room, I didn’t know the children were there."

"I thought they had gone for a vigil with their grandmother who attended vigil every Thursday,”

According to Punch, Babatola will be charged to court soon to face the consequence of his crime.
