A witness in the ongoing trial of a former chief of defense staff, Alex Badeh has disclosed how they converted Nigerian air force money to foreign currency.

At the resumed trial today, April 12, Salisu Abdullahi told the court that through the orders of Badeh, one of the officials of NAF converts N558,000 monthly for the former defense chief.

Abdullahi, a retired air commodore and former director of finance and account of the Nigerian air force said the person who converts the money works directly under the chief of defense staff.

The money Abdullahi had earlier explained is collected from a balance of the monthly salaries and emolument of air force personnel.

Abdullahi said the money when received, is handed over to the official who then converts it to United States dollars and then gives to the former defense chief.

He also informed the court that it is the office of the deputy director of budget that is responsible for preparing the Nigerian air force budget, adding that the deputy director of finance is in charge of allocation to various commands and units through the directorate of finance.

“I was in charge of the finances of the entire NAF, not my own office”, Abdullahi said.

After the cross-examination of Abdullahi the trial judge, Okon Abang adjourned the matter to Tuesday, April 19 for continuation of trial.

Meanwhile, a serving major general reportedly broke down in tears while he was being interrogated by the 13-man panel probing the procurement of arms and other military equipment between 2007 and 2015.

Some highly placed military sources said the two-star general, who once held a powerful position at one of the formations under the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) burst into tears when he was confronted with overwhelming evidence of alleged corrupt practices in the procurement of military equipment.

According to a source, the general had initially denied any wrongdoing in the arms deal but he had to eat his words when the audit panel confronted him with suspicious transactions made through his personal accounts.
