Preview: Age-long rivalry rekindled in Enugu as Rangers, 3SC clash

The longest rivalry in the Nigerian Professional Football League will be rekindled on Sunday, May 8, as league-chasing Enugu Rangers welcome Shooting Stars of Ibadan.

Between these two teams, 11 league titles have been won, with Rangers coming top with six league titles under their belt, while Shooting Stars can boast of five league titles. Only Enyimba have won more league titles than both teams. The Aba Elephants last season secured a record seventh league title. Northerners Kano Pillars have won four league titles.

Rangers are aiming to reclaim the top spot in the league following Abia Warriors 1 – 0 win over Giwa FC on Saturday, May 7. The win for Abia Warriors move atop the log on 27 points but with a better goal difference than Rangers.

The Flying Antelopes boast of a 100% record at home in the league this season, but they will be without two regular players; Bobby Clement and Obinna Nwobodo for the game.

On the other hand 3SC were spanked 6-0 on their last travel and have taken no point from seven away matches. They have conceded 18 goals and scored just three on their travels.

While Rangers are eager to return to winning ways after a 3-1 humiliating defeat versus Rivers United in a mid-week tie, their first defeat in five straight games, Shooting Stars will be hoping to get their first win in three games after a disappointing 2-2 draw against Plateau United midweek.

Both teams can boast of experienced coaches in Imama Amapakabo (Rangers) and Kadiri Ikhana (3SC).
