Falling containers have crushed makeshift structures, killing one person and leaving two others injured at Ijora area of Lagos, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said.
The incident happened around 5.30am on Thursday, May 12.
Agencies on ground to rescue victims are: the Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Ambulance service, Rapid Respond Squad, RRS, police officers from Nigeria Railways and Ijora Station and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence corps.
Michael Akindele, General Manager, LASEMA said the agency received a distress call concerning containers that fell at Sifax container terminal located at 110/112 Ijora road near Ijora bus stop at about 5:30am on Thursdays.
He said investigation conducted by the Agency’s Emergency Response Team at the incident scene revealed that the containers fell on adjoining illegal shanties due to operational error during relocation of the containers within the premises overnight.
“Further assessment revealed that operational activities were carried out without flood lights and operational safety procedures. Two adult male sustained bodily injury and have been treated by LASAMBUS, Unfortunately one adult female was taken out and confirmed dead by the Agency.
“She is identified as Ezinne. The corpse has been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU,” he stated.

According to him, proper investigation would be conducted by relevant agencies on the matter, while advising companies to ensure adequate safety measures were put in place during operational activities.
Akindele advised that emergency preparedness and safety procedures should be put in place to avert unnecessary loss of lives and properties in the state.
