838 ghost workers have been identified working as cemetery keepers have been uncovered in Ebonyi state.
According to the state government, the workers have been receiving consolidated health salary scheme (CONHESS) for a while now.
The state commissioner for local government and chieftancy affairs, Samuel Okoronkwo, who made this revelations, also denied rumours making rounds that the state was preparing to lay off medical workers in the local government areas.

According to Nigerian Bulletin, Okoronkwo explained that the state government is actually doing is to find out the workers that are not health workers, but are on the pay roll of the scheme.
The commissioner stated further that their investigations have shown that the previous administrations had 838 workers as cemetery keepers on their pay check despite the fact that there was no cemetery in the 13 local government areas managed by the state.
“The only cemetery in the state is in Abakaliki and it is being managed by the Catholic Church, so what are the cemetery keepers doing? Why are they earning CONHESS?” Okoronkwo queried.
While noting that the affected ghost workers would not be sacked, the commissioner informed that they would be removed from the scheme and posted to other areas where they would be more functional.
Recently, Ibrahim Gaidam, the governor of Yobe state, lamented the level at which the local government was short-changed by top government officials of the state. He also threatened to expose those behind ghost workers in the state.
The Nation reports that the governor spoke at the swearing in ceremony of members of the Judicial Service Commission in the state on Thursday, May 5.
Gaidam said that he has the names top government officials who put their relatives illegally on the local government payment vouchers and are collecting the salaries. However, he gave them a chance to remove fake names or it would be too late.
“I am aware of some top government officials in the state that are involved in this kind of mess. Some of them have put the names of their wives and children on payment voucher. My advice for them is to remove those names before it’s too late or else will expose them by publicly announcing their names,” he said.
