The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has scored Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari high on education since coming into power on May 29, 2015.

The centre said the Buhari-led administration have had a good outing in education in the past one year by avoiding the customary strike by various institutions in the education sector.

In a statement, the executive secretary of the centre, Ikpa Isaac said the stability maintained in education in the past one year was achieved the present administration despite the economic hardship in the country.

Isaac also commended the minister of education Adamu Adamu for a development of Nigeria’s education sector.

“The Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu had started on a less than popular footing with some policies and summersault like the controversial termination of the tenure of Vice Chancellors of federal government owned universities. But he has since gained traction and working hard to justify his appointment by President Buhari,” Isaac said in the statement.

“The ministry under Mallad Adamu demonstrated that it is in tune with trends in education worldwide with his support for the ICT revolution at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.  This is a pointer to his clear understanding of how important the sector is to our country,” he said.

He also urged the minister and President Buhari to continue improving the educational system in the country with the hope of an economic recovery.

“We also urge that the sector should be modernised as rapidly as possible given the years of neglect that had left curricula outdated by several decades. The development at JAMB, which fully digitized and modernised most of its operation is the way to go and should be rolled across others facets of the education sector,” he said.

Isaac also called on the minister to take solid measures towards addressing the issue of producing unemployable graduates by some institutions.

Meanwhile, a human rights activist, Adeniyi Alimi has said that President Buhari lacks the basic qualification – Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) – to govern Nigeria appropriately.

Alimi describe the Buhari-led administration as a disaster.
