Euro 2016 match preview: Hungary vs Portugal

Portugal's campaign so far has been anything but efficient - 49 shots at goal (as measured by Opta) have yielded just one goal. Of those attempts, 19 have been off target, 15 on target and another 15 blocked. Discounting blocked shots, that's a shot conversion rate of just 2.9% - and explains why the semi-finalists at Euro 2012 are at risk of an early exit in France despite dominating their first two games.


With 364 goals in 348 games for Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo is not a player normally associated with unflattering statistics - but his numbers in France tell their own story. Of the 20 shots he has tried at Euro 2016, just four have been on target and none have found the net.

Hungary are already through to the last 16, with four points already in the bag, and have relatively little to play for.

If they win their group they face the Group E runners-up - potentially Belgium - while finishing second would mean a date with England in Nice on Saturday. And if they end as one of the best third-placed teams they will meet Group D winners Croatia. The Hungarians have impressed against Austria and Iceland thus far, but things may get considerably tougher for Bernd Storck's men from now on.

TEAM NEWS

Hungary boss Bernd Storck could rotate his squad with their qualfication for the last 16 already assured.

The Hungarians are again set to be without Attila Fiola, who has an ankle injury, so centre-back Adam Lang may once again start at right-back.

Portugal will monitor left-back Raphael Guerreiro and midfielder Andre Gomes - both are nursing muscle problems.

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo is set to play his 17th match at the European Championship - a new record.

GROUP F PERMUTATIONS

Hungary are already through - they are guaranteed to at least finish as one of the best third-placed teams.

A win against Portugal will ensure Hungary win the group. A draw would also see them top the group - as long as Iceland don't win by a two-goal margin.

A Portuguese win will mean they qualify. Victory would also mean they top the group unless Iceland also win, and end with superior goal difference. Failing that, goals scored or fair play ranking would separate them.

If Iceland and Portugal both draw, then Iceland will end second as long as Portugal don't outscore them on the night
