Don’t blame us for not paying salaries of workers – Governor

– Governor Jibrilla says dwindling economy responsible for some governor’s inability to pay salaries

– He says workers need to continue to support the government

– He urged citizens to return back to farming as fertilisers will be produced

Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla has said that governors should not be blamed for their inability to pay the salaries of workers.

27 states have been finding it difficult to pay the salaries of their workers in spite of the bailout fund they received from the federal government. Five other states recently applied for another round of fund from the federal government.

PM News reports that the governor of Adamawa defended other governors when he received traditional rulers who paid him Sallah homage at the government house in Yola.

Jibrilla explained that the fall in the country’s economy was responsible for worker’s inability to receive their salaries.

He said workers in Adamawa should appreciate the state for its ability to pay salaries in spite of the dwindling revenue from the federation account.

He also urged traditional rulers in the state to urge the citizens on the advantage of peaceful coexistence and the need to go back to farming.

He said Adamawa was among the seven states selected for Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrower’s Rice production programme.

He pledged that the government would readily provide fertilisers to farmers in the state.

In their separate responses, the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Barkindo Mustafa and Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isa, applauded the governor for his effort to transform the state and assured him of the traditional rulers council support.

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa decried the destruction of pipelines by militants in the Niger Delta region and said it has affected the payment of salaries.

The Delta state governor who spoke at Government Office Annex in Warri at a stakeholders’ meeting cautioned that salary of workers was at stake due to the drop in oil production caused by the militants.
He said: “The larger Nigerian government has been in financial crisis over dwindling oil prices. Increased production would have helped cushion the impact but instead we are faced with destruction of oil assets.
“Dealing with dwindling oil prices and destruction of oil assets, we are now producing just half of our quota. And we are all really worried because of the greater effect is on Delta State. Before now we receive up to N20 billion monthly, but what we have now is so low. Last time we got N3.4 billion. Last month what we received has dropped to N3 billion. We now get 1/7th of what we use to have.”
