NFF selects German tactician for Super Eagles job

– The NFF technical committee has approved the appointment of Gernot Rohr

– The German coach will live and work in Nigeria as Super Eagles technical adviser 

– Frenchman Paul Le Guen had earlier rejected the technical adviser job 

German coach Gernot Rohr will become the new technical adviser of the Super Eagles following the recommendation by the technical and development committee of the Nigeria Football Federation to the Executive Board.

Speaking to thenff.com, Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, vice chairman of the committee, said he was recommended after a long session with him in Abuja on Saturday.

“The committee was impressed with Mr. Rohr’s profile and current activities for the German Football Federation (DFB), so we invited him to Nigeria for exhaustive deliberations.

He added: “He was very positive, showed great interest in the job and is ready and willing to live in Nigeria. He is also willing to work with indigenous Nigerian coaches and with the committee, and believes the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is very important to the NFF.

“He swayed the committee with his calmness, good knowledge of the African terrain, focus and maturity.”

Rohr, 63, for the likes of FC Girondins Bordeaux in France as a defender later went on to become a coach at the club leading them to UEFA Cup final in 1996 before they lost to Bayern Munich of Germany.

In Africa, he has coached the likes of Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso.

Recall that NFF president Amaju Pinnick had confirmed the German’s appointment to journalist before the official announcement.

Frenchman Paul Le Guen had earlier rejected the technical adviser job because he could not come to terms with the NFF.

Rohr will work with the likes of Alloy Agu and Salisu Yusuf in the national team set-up.
