Read how to resign from the DSS

Editor’s note: Following the news of mass retirement from the Department of State Services, Ibraheem Odewole, a personnel serving in Ogun state has addressed the report and some of public beliefs about the institution.

Odewale in this opinion piece debunks claims that the DSS is a cult and many of the personnel who wish to leave are forced to remain in the agency against their will.

After reading the piece by my fellow compatriot in the Service, Robert-Sam Isaiah, I was emboldened to add my voice to the narrative and debunk some of the fallacies being peddled about the SSS, particularly as it relates to purported mass resignation.

To start with, I admit that conditions of service in the SSS may not be the best in the world, but it is definitely one of the best in Nigeria. From the first class training to global opportunities, there is so much to gain from working in the SSS. This is why so many people struggle each year to get enlisted into the Service and why only the best are taken.

Contrary to popular belief and misinformation by some disgruntled few, the SSS is not a cult where persons who wish to renounce their membership are forced to stay on.

Personnel who wish to pursue other endeavours are usually expected to follow extant resignation process and are even assisted to excel in their new chosen career paths.

Therefore, the allegation that 400 staff of the SSS have tendered their resignations is untenable and is totally a figment of the imagination of those behind these lies. In the current global economic downtown and general dearth of good paying employment, no sane person who works in this organization will be in a hurry to leave.

It should also be noted that no responsible organization or leadership will allow its trained hands to exit in droves, which is why everything is done to ensure that issues relating to staff welfare is uppermost on the priority list of the leadership. A lot of efforts and resources are invested in the training of staff.

Interestingly, in the past, many who had rushed out of the SSS for supposed better job offers have often made a u- turn and written to the management to reabsorb them into the Service. This is verifiable.

The job security in the SSS is a major incentive and is the reason many people serve out their thirty-five years in the job. And the fact that things are done by the book ensures that no one is marginalized or victimized.

A good number of us remain passionate, loyal and dedicated to serving our dear country Nigeria through the opportunity provided by the service. It is indeed heartwarming that I am not alone in this resolve.

Even if there are only two of us left, we will continue to do the job that is expected of this Service which is to ensure the security of our fatherland.

Those who cannot abide by the current reforms being undertaken by the present administration at the centre and the leadership of the SSS are free to leave, so far as they do not constitute a menace to the general public.
