Gov. Babangida will live to be impeached another day after paying lawmakers N17m

It takes a smart and/or die-hard Governor to avoid impeachment in Nigeria.

Niger State Governor, Aliyu Babangida, may be both.

The clamour by the members of the Niger state House of Assembly to have Babangida impeached appears to have simmered, after they each got paid N17m.

According to Punch Newspapers, the lawmakers received N17m from the governor after which they were also promised by the state government that their other demands would soon be met.

But alas, it may not be a bribe.

One of the lawmakers confirmed to the publication that: “It was not as if the governor bribed us, it is our legal entitlements and we have a right to ask for it before the expiration of our tenure. We have been paid and calm has returned to the assembly complex.”

When asked if indeed the impeachment plan had been dropped, he responded like someone who just got an alert of N17m, saying: “there is no need for it again.”

It is however, believed that the money paid to the lawmakers may have been part of the allowances they were being owed since February.
