Four Students Confirmed Dead In MAPOLY Cult Clash

Four students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Ojeere,Abeokuta have been killed during a cult clash between two cult groups.

The incident occurred at Oluwo and Adigbe areas of Obafemi Owode local government area of the state,which is largely dominated by the students of the institution.

When our correspondent visited the areas, many of the houses were under lock and key as many students have fled their hostels for a more safer areas.

It was gathered that the development was not unconnected with the recent killing of no fewer than four people many of whom were identified as students of the Polytechnic.

The root of the crisis,our correspondent gathered was due to supremacy battle between Eiye cult group and another group,Bucaneer.

Those killed are one Muraina Ibrahim, popularly called Elebe, ND II student of Computer Engineering department,who was reportedly killed last Wednesday along the popular sap route.

Another ND II student of Mass Communication department simply identified as Demola was also killed last Saturday along MacJob street, Fowobi area,Abeokuta.

Identities of the other two students could not be ascertained as at time of filling this report but one of them was reportedly killed at Mango area of Oluwo while the last one was dropped at Iyana Oloke area,also in Abeokuta.

Meanwhile, no fewer than ten person have been reportedly arrested by the police in connection with the killings.

One of the students leaders who spoke with our correspondent, Adegbola Ebenezer Ifeoluwa blamed the action of the police saying the arrests carried out were indiscriminate.

While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the police officer in Adigbe Divisional Police station,Ifeoluwa said attempt by the leaders to secure the release of the innocent students was resisted by the police, while some of them were also arrested, detained and manhandled.

He said, “the police started raiding on Saturday, some students were arrested at Q bar in Adigbe while others were arrested along the streets and bus stops.

“We approached the police station as leaders of the students, the mission was a peaceful protest to secure the release of detained innocent students.

“We were told that the police have visited the houses of the arrested students for incriminating objects and they found none. But we were amazed at the attempt of the police to secure false statements from the detained students.

“Unfortunately many of us were also arrested, detained while the police shot directly at us. I was particularly beaten with iron rod”, Ifeoluwa disclosed.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO,DSP Muyiwa Adejobi said nine students were being held in connection with the killings.

The PPRO explained that the police has been facing security challenges in Onikolobo and some other areas of the state adding that the students should not abuse their status to involve in Cultism and attack police officers.

He said, “We have been facing security challenges in Onikolobo for some days because of some suspected Cultists clashing in the area and we would not fold our arms and allow brake down of law and order.

“We will continue what we have to do within the ambit of the law and any cult member found would be dealt with. If the students feel the police are not doing the right thing, they should follow the procedure and not staging protest.

“We have our targets, we know who we are looking for, we know the black spots and we will fish them out. Any student wrongly arrested would be released after being questioned.”

He assured that those found guilty will soon be paraded by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abdulmajid Ali.
