Although it's a diverse continent, there are still a few trends that stretch across Europe.
Here are 7 mistakes you should avoid making when travelling to Europe.
-
Water is NOT free: Unlike the United States where water is generally free in restaurants with each order (except your order fancy water), places like Italy and France will charge you for water (and bread) so don't get taken unawares.
-
Don't rely on cash cards: Cash is generally a preferable option in Europe especially in cafes, bars, smaller museums and of course public transport.
-
Not knowing to claim your VAT tax refund: The best part about shopping in Europe - VAT tax refund. What this means is, when you shop (especially big purchases) ask the cashier for a VAT tax-refund form, fill it and keep your receipt. The store will stamp your completed form, which you should bring to the tax refund desk at the airport before you leave Europe. You are eligible to receive a 19-25% cash refund on all purchases with minimums that range from zero (Germany, Ireland & the UK) to 175 euros (about N37,000) in France. Cool, yeah?
-
Restricting your visit to the usual places: The United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany are just some of the more popular destinations for Nigerians, but several other places especially in Eastern Europe also offer great history and culture.
-
Not trying to learn the language of where you're going: Places like France are known for their great pride in their language. So it would do you a world of good to learn at least a few words in the language of the place you intend to visit.
