How strange disease killed many in Kebbi

– While the villagers said deaths have been recorded from since the breakout of the ‘mystery’ disease, the government maintain that there is no death recorded
There is high level of fear and confusion in Yauri local government of Kebbi state over death of several people within 24-hour of contacting a strange disease.
The onion market where the first outbreak of the disease was recorded
The cause of mystery disease has become a debating point between locals and the state government. On the party of the members of the community where the disease was first spotted, the illness was attributed to witchcraft or a Jin spirit attacks but the authorities believed that it might have caused by outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

It was learnt that the victims were said to have complained of stomach pain, high body temperature and severe headache. None of the victims survive the disease in the next 24-hour of coming in contact with it.
However, there is still confusion over the number of deaths recorded so far from the ‘mystery disease’, some people said 10 persons had died while others maintained that the number was higher than 10.
The government on its part said there was no case of recorded death maintaining that all those brought to Yauri General Hospita had been treated and discharged.
Daily Trust reported that the community leaders of the affected areas decline to comment on the number of death persons on the instruction of Emir of Yauri, Dr. Zayyanu Abdullahi.
But some members of the community confirmed that many deaths were recorded as a result of the disease that was first noticed from Kasuwan Albasa (Onion market) very close to River Yauri.
According to Shehu Wakala, the death toll has climbed to 17 as at Thursday, February 18, adding that the reason why the disease still remains a mystery to locals was because it struck only people linked with that market.
Also, a trader in the market, Aliyu Kesoje, disclosed that the disease started manifesting in the market on Monday, February 8, when the market was full to capacity.
He said: “I was in the shop when I was told of the disease. And few minutes later the market became deserted by traders for fear of contacting it.”

Kesoje said that it was two days ago that people started returning to their shops for business since there were no reports of disease again.
A senior medical personnel who spoke on the outbreak of the disease on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to speak on the matter confirmed that based on the outcome of their investigation, the disease was as a result of the outbreak of Cerebral Spinal Meningitis.
He, however, dismissed the witchcraft allegation touted by the villagers and traders.
