Former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho was told Manchester United to appoint him before May 1 or risk losing him.

According to the Guardian, the Portuguese is intent on confirming his next managerial position in one month’s time.

In recent weeks, United chiefs have secretly Louis van Gaal in recent months, despite it looking certain at the beginning of the year that Mourinho would take over from the Dutchman.

United have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League, they are only one point behind neighbours Manchester City, who sit in fourth place but that has not stopped supporters from calling for Van Gaal’s head.

The coach spent close to $150m on talent in the summer and is not competing for the League title.

Recall that Mourinho has signed a pre-contract agreement with United to replace Louis Van Gaal in the summer.

The former Porto, Real Madrid and Inter Milan trainer  will be paid to £15m in compensation if he is not appointed by Manchester United by 1 June.
