“We are suffering, no fuel, no power, no money,” Kano residents cry to Osinbajo
Hundreds of enraged residents of Kano city “welcomed”, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president, who has arrived to the commercial nerve center of northern Nigeria on Saturday, April 9.
During his visit to victims of Sabon-Gari fire disaster, desparate locals took to the streets carrying various placards condemning the current economic situation in the city while chanting: “We are suffering, no fuel, no power, no money.”
According to Mr Osinbajo, the federal government is aware of the people’s hardships and makes every effort to find long-lasting and effective solutions to the problems and had already took several measures to mitigate the existing effects.
He said: “We will make sure that we provide and support you with what we have to ensure that people do not suffer. I am here to bring greetings from President Muhammadu Buhari and to tell you that he is with you and standing with you even at this trying moment.”
According to the vice president, the federal government will assist the state government with the Sabon Gari market’s renovation. Besides, he praised the state government for ensuring the victim’s relocation and supporting their business activities.
Earlier the Kano state government had reportedly identified 7000 shops and paid N70 million as one year rent for the traders. “The state government is also renovating access roads and will provide fire fighting equipment and other facilities in the market,” governor Abdullahi Ganduje said.
Mr Osinbajo also inspected the 2000 affordable housing unit at Amana City and the newly reconstructed roads.
