Prince Charles and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for maturity and self possession he exhibited reacting to British Prime Minister David Cameron’s remark describing Nigeria as “fantastically corrupt”.

Daily Trust reports that Simon Ogah, Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to the UK, disclosed this on Tuesday, May 17, in London at a meeting with UK-based Nigerians and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the president’s senior special assistant on foreign affairs and diaspora.

Recall that Buhari said that Cameron had nothing to apologize for, as he was just talking about what he knows.

“I’m not going to demand an apology from anyone, what I’ll demand is a return of assets,” he said.

Ogah noted that many other personalities who met with the Nigerian leader during his visit to London expressed delight at his reaction to the prime minister’s controversial remark.

“Some people said President Buhari’s reaction aptly put Prime Minister Cameron down. From the way people are talking, we don’t need to add anything more. The president has said enough. Let them return our assets,” he said.

In her speech, Dabiri-Erewa stressed that the war against corruption was a collective one and called on all Nigerians to express anger and worry over the monumental stealing of the country’s resources.

“You should key-in to President Buhari’s mantra: ‘Let’s kill corruption before corruption kills us’,” she said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state noted that Buhari’s utterances outside Nigeria was the reason the British prime minister described Nigeria as “fantastically corrupt”.

“What do you expect from the international community when the president of a nation keeps going abroad to say that his people are corrupt?” he wondered.

The governor called on the president to apologise to Nigerians for demarketing the country and its people.
