Incredible! VIO, LASTMA impound 181,986 vehicles in just one year

The two major agencies responsible for managing transportation rules and regulation under the Lagos state government known as the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have both certainly shown they are money spinning agencies of government as they have impounded at least 181, 986 vehicles in the last one year in Lagos.

It should be noted that the fine paid my motorists, who have their vehicles impounded varies, depending on what these road transport enforcing agencies place on such individuals.

These vehicle owners received fines ranging from N10,000 to N50,000. With these, the government has raked in over N200 million from assorted fines on motorists in the last one year.

The commissioner for transportation in Lagos, Dr Dayo Mobereola disclosed this on Friday, May 20, stating that the VIO and LASTMA officers had aggressively enforced the traffic laws in the state.

The breakdown of the figure showed that 50,000 vehicles were impounded by LASTMA officials for traffic violation in one year, while VIO arrested 131, 986 vehicles in one year.

A breakdown of the vehicles impounded by VIO revealed that 11,797 vehicles do not have hackney permit, vehicle license, insurance and road worthiness certificates, while 13,100 vehicles were arrested for not having driver’s license.

Also, about 12,882 vehicles that are not road worthy were impounded by VIO, just as 464 unpainted/unpleasant inscriptions on vehicles were arrested, while 11,067 vehicles with fake documents were also impounded.

More so, 14,050 vehicles that violated the Lagos State Drivers Institute Law were arrested by VIO, while 2,397 vehicles that violated vehicle accreditation were impounded and another 65,757 vehicles were arrested for violation of traffic offense.

As the Lagos state government continues to enforce transportation laws on motorists plying the state roads, residents of Idimu and Orisunbare communities in Egbe-Edimu Local Government Development Council (LGDC) have appeal to both Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and local authority to fix the only major road in the area.
