Remi Tinubu, Chairman of the Committee on women affairs on Tuesday, May 3, commended the President Muhammadu Buhari administration for the first time.

While making contributions on food security bill, on the floor of the Senate, Tinubu said that this administration is working hard to put food on the tables of Nigerians.

The bill sponsored by Theodore Orji representing Abia central is titled a bill to make provisions for freedom from hunger and the right to adequate food of acceptance quality, the right of every child to basic nutrition and for connected purposes 2016.

Tinubu commended the presenter of the bill and other lawmakers who contributed adding that this bill has come at a very trying time in the country.

“The government we have presently has only been in government for about 11 months. Senator Orji should have given us an example of what has been done in his state.

“This present administration has placed priority on agriculture. It is going to take time.

“When we get to the committee, we are going to look at it critically. Even in the next month, we are not going to see but this administration will make sure that we can put food on our table,” he said.

Ehinnaya Abaribe representing Abia south senatorial district while supporting the bill said substenable farming and food is one of the major problems existing in the country.

He also urged that an agency should be set up to handle agricultural mishaps in the country.

“We are talking about something very serious which is the stomach. There are so many problems in the country and part of the difficulties we are having today is substenable farming and food.

“I will support anything that helps us with the problem. Another aspect that was not brought out well is the bill an agency that will be able to forecast what will happen when we are not able to handle the agricultural activities,” he said.

Adamu Aliero representing Kebbi  central senatorial district while making his contribution said that if the bill is successfully implemented, the country will be more developed.

“The pride of any nation is to keep itself. Unfortunately, Nigeria has been caught in a trap. Under this regime, we have agriculture as the main priority to the bill. If the provisions of this bill are implemented, we will reach the promise land,” he said.

However, Bukola Saraki, the Senate president thanked the senators who contributed and passed the bill for second reading. He referred the bill to committee on agriculture and rural development.
