Guber election: Curfew declared in Port Harcourt
by Godwin Akanfe
Fears were raised of impending violence have taken root in Port Harcourt as an army unit arrested five men with assault rifles in Port Harcourt yesterday.
The arrests took place in the Rumueme-Rumueprikom-Oroazi areas in Obio/Akpor local government of Rivers state.
The operation started at 2 in the afternoon and ended with five arrested with the arms and ammunition.
However, YNaija understands that the military is taking security more serious because of the murder of one of a soldier on March 28 during the presidential and national assembly elections. The dead soldier was killed by a band of militia men.
The operation was carried out to arrest growing violence and proliferation of illegal arms and weapons in the areas.
An eyewitness said that several persons believed to be thugs and militia working for a political party that has practically over-run those areas by coercion and threats, were arrested.
Meanwhile, residents of Port Harcourt have been reacting to rumours that a curfew will be imposed this evening. A few people who spoke to YNaija indicated that they planned to get home early to avoid violence as tension builds up.
However, speaking to us, the state police Commissioner, Hosea Karmar said that there would be a curfew from midnight until 5 am, then from 8 am until 5 pm.
