In the past 3 days, a sum total of 453 women and girls have been rescued by the Nigerian Army from the Islamic terrorist sect, Boko Haram.
The first set -about 200 girls and 93 women were rescued from Sambisa forest on Tuesday, April 28.
After the recapture of the females, there was widespread optimism that some of them were part of the 219 girls abducted from their school in Chibok in April 2014.
On Thursday, April 30, the Army announced that another set of hostages, numbering 160 were rescued by Nigerian troops from the same stronghold of Boko Haram.
After the second rescue operation, Acting Director Public Relations of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani K. Usman said: “Troops of 7 Division Nigerian Army cleared several terrorists strong points and training camps within Sambisa forest, Borno State, Nigeria. The troops have also rescued additional women and children. They have been evacuated to a safety zone for further processing. During the encounter unfortunately we lost a soldier, while four others were wounded in action.”
According to Amnesty International, since the start of 2014, Boko Haram have seized about 2,000 women and girls.
Amnesty’s Africa director for research and advocacy, Netsanet Belay, says: “There are thousands more women and girls, and men and boys, who have been abducted by Boko Haram.”
