Nigeria Bureau of Statistics modify the definition of unemployment
by Ranti Joseph
Well, Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) doesn’t seem to agree with the old definition of unemployment and as such decided to modify it a bit to suit them.
According to the old definition by the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), unemployment is people who do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work. Also, people who were temporarily laid off and are waiting to be called back to that job are included in the unemployment statistics.
The chief security officer, Yemi Kale on Thursday on a television programme on Channels television modified the definition of unemployment.
Kale, who said that Nigeria unemployment rate will be a proportion of 65.7million and not the entire 172 million. He also stated that students, voluntary house wives who can’t work or those younger than 15 or older than 65 are not part of labour force.
Is redefining the definition of unemployment the solution to solving the situation that has been affecting the country for over 25 years?
A twitter user Boason Onafaye @boasonbusiness went on twitter to share his views on it.
