Police Arrest Two Masquerades For Stealing And Assault (Photo)

Two masquerades have been arrested along Nru community, the university town of Nsukka for robbing, torture and extorting money from unsuspecting victims by a combined team of men of the Area Command and the Nsukka Urban Police Division.

Following the increasing atrocious acts by the masquerades, the two suspects were arrested after engaging the police team in a physical combat. They are presently helping the police in their investigations of torture and extortion.

According to Vanguard Metro, the suspects were said to gave been overpowered by the police men, when passers-by were stoning and raining abuses on the officers. Inspite of this other masked individuals fled into nearby bushes and communities.

Following complaints from different quarters of masquerades frequent brutality, extortion and blockage of roads along Ugwu-Nkwo, Orba road, Nru junction, in the process of which they maim people and compel victims to drop money or face the wrath of masquerades

One of the suspects who spoke with Vanguard, Omeje Ugochukwu, a 22-year-old man from Amaozalla community in Nsukka local government Area, Enugu state, said he used the masquerade to beg for money to support himself as an apprentice welder but not to apply force to compel people to give him money.

He blamed some masquerades who operated earlier in the morning, describing them as being more volatile and wicked, and had forcefully extorted money from people.

The second masquerade who was arrested identified himself as Anayo Ezema, a 23-year-old man from Isi-Uja, Ihe/Owere community, said he is a vulcaniser.

It was gathered that the masquerades were celebrating the annual festival of Ihe/Owere autonomous community by entertaining inhabitants, visitors to the community and the University town at large but not to maim people.

ACP Musa Haladu, the area commander, Nigeria police command Nsukka, while confirming the arrest of the two masquerades, urged communities in the Command not to allow the masquerades disturb their everyday activities.

He added that every community in the country has one culture and that such cultures will not be used to disturb the existing peace in a community.
