Igbos Finally Beg Deji Of Akure For Forgiveness

The two week clash between the Igbo residents in Akure and the royal home of the Ondo state capital has apparently been doused as the leadership of the Igbo community in the town moved to reconcile with the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Adelusi, on Friday, October 23.

According to Premium Times report, the Igbos swallowed their pride and begged for pardon from Oba Adelusi.

This peace move between the palace and the Igbo community was made possible with the intervention of the Ondo state government to resolve the matter.

Following the feud between the Deji and the leader of the Igbo community in the town, Gregory Iloehike, the monarch had banned the title of ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ in Akureland.

Iloehike was said to have addressed the monarch in ways that insinuated insults on the royalty. This infuriated the youths of Akure and the Deji in council.

Prior to the ban, the monarch had also ordered the dethronement of the Eze Ndigbo, Iloehike.

The Afenifere Renewal Group also on its part said that  residing in the state.

As part of the few conditions for the settlement, the Deji added to the ban ordering the title of Eze Ndigbo to be reviewed and replaced with a non-controversial honorary title.

Having instructed that the dethroned Iloehike must apologise for his unruly behaviour in at least three national dailies as well as go on air to also tender an apology, the Oba also ordered him to write a letter of apology to the monarch and the Deji-in-council.

Oba Adelusi also directed that the Igbo leader should stop wearing any form of crown and must comply with all the directives of the palace.

The Akure monarch maintained that a truce could then be brokered once the conditions were met.

Thus, upon that note, the president of the Ohaeneze Ndigbo in the state, Okechukwu Okorie, the chief of staff to the state governor, Kola Ademujimi, Iloehika and other members of the Igbo community prostrated before the monarch seeking his forgiveness.

The Igbos noted that the Akure town for many years had a hospitable place for them as such could not afford to allow such errors happen again.

The governor’s chief of staff also appealed to the Deji to forgive all the wrongdoings of his Igbo brothers, saying that there would be no meaningful development in an atmosphere of rancour.

Premium Times reports that the Oba responded and said that he had pardoned the offenders, promising that their shops at the markets would be opened on Saturday.

Speaking further, the Deji however said that the position of the disputed ‘Eze Ndigbo’ would be considered at the council of Obas which would be held in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, men of the Ondo state police command have discovered a strange tunnel in the state capital.
