Seyi Shay: Why singer is on a good run this year

Seyi Shay

What Seyi Shay possesses is unique. It is scintillating sexual mystery, love and good music rolled into one hot entertainer.

The current state of Seyi Shay’s career is one which has kept many wondering what exactly is the cause of her success in 2014, and 2015.

Truthfully she is not yet on Tiwa Savage’s level of success and recognition. She isn’t recognized in the hallowed league of indigenous songbirds Waje and Omawumi, neither does she possess the consuming raw enthusiasm of Yemi Alade.

But what Seyi Shay possesses is unique. It is scintillating sexual mystery, love and good music rolled into one hot entertainer. She glides, she sings, she sashays and she radiates an enigmatic appeal, which in many ways has buoyed her music.

Prior to the release of her single ‘Ragga ragga’ in 2013, Seyi Shay has had quite a journey in music.

She wrote and produced three songs for the soundtrack to Konami's video game Crime Life: Gang Wars (2005).She also wrote "You Will See", a song that was included on Melanie C's third studio album Beautiful Intentions (2005). Shay wrote "White Lies", a song from Chip's Transition album. In 2008, she became the lead singer for the now defunct pop girl group From Above. The group signed a recording deal with Sony/Columbia and was managed by Mathew Knowles' Music World Entertainment company. Shay is currently working on her debut studio project. She has released the singles "Irawo", "Ragga Ragga", and "Chairman" to support the upcoming album.

Before these releases she had to undergo changes in her team. Flytime Entertainment was dropped, and J-Management took over the reins of her career.

What happened next after ‘Ragga Ragga’ single is what has kept her on this path of success and relevance. Released in January 2014, Shay displayed a part of her which struck all the right chords – her sexual appeal turned into a melodic art. Next came the video which did breathe new life into her.

Seyi Shay struck silver with that ‘Ragga Ragga’. But gold was discovered in ‘Murda’. Hooking up Patoranking who was riding a good wave of releases and acceptance, and infusing the musical genius of Shaydee, She created pure gold. The video screamed sex in an appealing way, and charted in many ways.

Seyi Shay rode that wave, lapping up all the increased attention and recognition. And while Nigerians watched and waited, she had just the perfect follow-up for everyone. Wizkid became the next name to join her in creating her next hit song ‘Crazy’. The song had the perfect combination of pop lyrics, club-targeted instrumentation, and the star dust of Wizkid. It took its time, and exploded.

Another single ‘Jangilova’ has been released and captured the East, but it failed to connect to mainstream fans. Se dip in form has now been wiped off by the emotion-laden ‘Right now’.

Seyi Shay’s secret formula is all in the strategy of her content marketing. Her creation process combines semi-raunchy lyrics with classic love routines and a catchy beat. But more importantly, she understands the need for a strong follow-up single to consolidate on her gains. ‘Ragga Ragga’, ‘Murda’, ‘Crazy’, ‘Jangilova’, and ‘Right now’ all are upgrades to each other. Each successive release is a novelty.

The singer plans to release her debut album this year, and she has kept Nigeria expectant by this. Also has she signed a new deal with international music company, Universal Island Records, as a testament to her fiery form.

The time is ripe for her debut album. 2015 has been good to her.
