Rivers election: Gov Wike cries out, read what he is begging 50 countries to do for him

– Rives state government accuses Amaechi, APC of inciting violence

– Cries out to over 50 countries of the world to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections

– Says APC’s antics are against democracy

The Rivers state government has called on the United States, Chinese governments and other countries to come to their aid over the forthcoming elections in the state.

The letter sent to abut 50 countries on Monday, March 14 requested the intervention of the countries, including the African Union, for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Austin Tam-George, the Rivers commissioner for Information and Communication, who signed the letters, asked the world leaders “to urgently initiate and maintain pressure on the Federal Government of Nigeria to allow free, fair and violence-free elections in Rivers State on the 19th of March 2016.”

According to Premium Times, Tam-George accused immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, and Dakuku Peterside, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last year’s governorship election in the state, of openly inciting violence against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The letter read: “This absolutist politics of the APC is not only a direct threat to democracy in Nigeria, but seems to be a manifesto for the open politicization of the security forces of the country.

“Mr Amaechi has himself publicly threatened to ‘flood’ every polling unit in Rivers State with soldiers.

“The homes of key leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party are being routinely raided and vandalized by Mr Amaechi’s goons. And plans have already been perfected to arrest all leaders of the PDP in Rivers State 48 hours to the elections on the 19th of March.

“With a population of 4.5 million people, Rivers State is the oil and gas metropolis of Nigeria. The eruption of violence in a State with strong multi-ethnic fault lines could cripple Nigeria’s ailing economy, and reverberate across the country’s borders.”

They also stated that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to heed their appeals to call Amaechi to order.

Meanwhile, Wike is alleging that the APC plans to use soldiers to rig the March 19, 2016 national and state assembly rerun election in the state.

According to Leadership, Governor Wike who made the allegations when he spoke on Monday, March 14 during the grand finale of the PDP campaign rally for Rivers south-east senatorial district, called on supporters of the party in the state to protect their votes during the rerun.

He said: “Why are the leaders of the APC running away from election after their victory at the tribunal? They have refused to campaign. All they do is to boast that that they will flood the state with soldiers who will rig the elections.

“We have a mass movement of Rivers people who represent an army of voters. They will subdue the rigging army imported by Amaechi.”
