10 Reasons Why There Is Always Traffic In Lagos (PHOTOS)

Lagos is an amazing city. The number of persons who come to the city daily is a testimony of how wonderful it is. One of the biggest problems that the city has however is traffic. It is a problem that commuters and drivers go through every day. It is not surprising that tempers fly very quickly when people are stuck in traffic due to the pent up anger they feel. The state government has tried different measures to reduce traffic by encouraging water transportation and mass transportation but traffic still persists.

Here are ten reasons why there is always traffic in Lagos

Bad Roads

bad road

Bad roads in Lagos slow down the movement of vehicles as drivers try to manoeuvre their way through the pot holes. The more vehicles that slow down to navigate pot holes, the more traffic builds up. When this goes on for a long time, it results in a gridlock.

Accident

Reckless driving usually lead to accidents when this happens, it results in traffic in the city. If it is an accident that involves big vehicles or lives are lost, commuting is automatically badly affected. This is because a lot of people get involved in the rescue process or sometimes, discussion and exchange of accusation process. This affects people who are coming from behind and leads to traffic.

Faulty Vehicles

Some Lagosians are notorious for not taking their vehicles for servicing and inspection until it develops fault. Unfortunately, this might happen during transit when the vehicle suddenly breaks down in the middle of the road. This slows down movement of vehicles as they navigate around the vehicles.

Rain

The rainy season in Lagos brings about heavy traffic. Visibility becomes low and bad roads also contribute to the problem. Drivers are careful as in some places, drainages are so filled that it is difficult to tell the roads apart from the drainage. Also, pot holes on the road are filled with water making it difficult to tell how deep some of them are. This slows down movement considerably resulting in traffic.

Wrong Way

Some drivers in Lagos are notorious for driving against traffic especially when their route is slow. As soon as a vehicle takes the first move, other drivers follow suit which usually results in traffic in the lane they are using. It is usually difficult to find a way back to the appropriate lane because other drivers see it as a way to punish the vehicles for using the wrong lane and thus increase traffic.

U Turn

Points and places on Lagos roads where vehicles can make U turns can also be responsible for traffic. First, vehicles have to slow down in order to make U turn. Secondly on narrow roads, the driver is forced to make a tilt to the right before making the U turn and this affect other vehicles not making any turn. The slower the movement, the heavier the traffic will be.

Intersection

intersection

Intersections in Lagos are usually responsible for traffic especially when traffic lights or traffic wardens are unavailable. Drivers are in a hurry and as there is nothing to nobody to stop and pass vehicles, there is usually a gridlock. Sometimes, it takes a volunteer to intervene before movement can be restored at intersections.

Rush Hour

Traffic Jam as a result of partial closure of third mainland bridge in Lagos to give way for repair

Mornings in Lagos are usually period of serious traffic especially Monday mornings. The traffic subsides during the day but builds up again when people are returning from work. It is almost impossible to use the Third Mainland Bridge to the Island in the morning without experiencing traffic. The same also applies in the evening when returning to the mainland. This is because a lot of people go to the island from the mainland in the morning and back to their homes in the evening.

Blocked Alternative Route

Alternative routes are supposed to reduce the passage of vehicles on main roads but unfortunately, these alternative routes are sometimes used as car parks. Sometimes, these alternative routes are converted to party venues by people living in the neighbourhood. This puts the pressure on the main roads and makes traffic inevitable

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY AMINU ABUBAKAR (FILES) -- A file picture taken on May 29, 2014 shows Nollywood celebrity Patience Ozokwor, aka Mama G, pleading for the release of the more than 200 abducted Chibok school girls in Lagos, during a demonstration by civil society groups and celebrities of the film and entertainment industries to press for the girls' release, seven weeks after their abduction by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, and on the occasion of Nigeria's Democracy Day. The northeast Nigeria town of Chibok used to fill up before Christmas as people returned home to visit their families, but with the 219 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram still missing, few feel like celebrating this year. Chibok falls in Borno state, the epicentre of Boko Haram's five-year uprising which has killed more than 13,000 people and forced an estimated 1.5 million others from their homes. Nigerians were forced to recall the April 14 mass abduction in Chibok, following news that another 185 people, mostly women and children, were seized on December 14, 2014 in the nearby town of Gumsuri in another attack blamed on the Islamists. One method Lagosians use to make their voices heard and their grievances known is to organise rallies and take to the roads. Sometimes, they march from one point of the road to another chanting songs and passing their message. This activity slows down movement of vehicles for that period and the build-up of slow moving vehicles sometimes result in gridlock.
