Bayelsa Guber: Security Operatives Pledge Collaboration With INEC

The Commissioner of Police for Bayelsa state, Nasiru Oki, and other security operatives newly deployed to the state ahead of the December 5 Governorship poll, have declared that they will collaborate with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair, credible and peaceful election.

The new Bayelsa state Police boss gave the indication, while briefing Government House correspondents shortly after the 33rd Security Council meeting presided over by Governor Seriake Dickson in Government House, Yenagoa.

Oki who said officers and men of the Police Force were adequately prepared and ready for the elections noted that, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has assured them of the provision of adequate personnel and logistics to ensure a hitch-free election.

The Commissioner of Police explained that in line with the policy thrust of the IGP, the command would mobilize members of the public to participate in community policing towards securing their areas.

According to Oki: “One of the policy thrusts of the Inspector General of police is the participation of the community people in securing their areas so we are going to mobilize members of the public to participate in community policing. The strategy is already on the ground. We have already done our operational orders as regards who should do what, when to do what and we will work in conjunction with INEC officials.”

In the area of crime bursting Oki said the command has mapped out strategies to be adopted in ridding the state of criminals and warned criminally minded people who are bent on fomenting trouble in the state to have a change of heart or be ready to dealt with decisively.

The Commander, Joint Task Force, Operation Pulo Shield, Maj. Gen. Alani Okunlola in his comment said the Security Council meeting deliberated on the emerging threat to lives and property and identified areas, where they need to beef up security, to make the state safe.

Governor Seriake Dickson who spoke earlier at the meeting said his administration would work closely with the security agencies towards maintaining law and order, stressing that, acts capable of undermining the security and sovereignty of the state and country would decisively dealt with according to law.

The Governor condemned the recent protests by pro-Biafra youths in some parts of the country and urged other ethnic nationalities residing in Bayelsa to remain law abiding and conduct themselves peacefully, particularly as the governorship election approaches.

The Governor  solicited the cooperation of members of the Security Council, especially the newly deployed security officers recently posted to the state to work assiduously to ensure that they bring their wealth of experience to improve upon the existing peace and stability in the homogeneous Ijaw state.

The major political parties are already exchanging words ahead of the election, four days ago the , saying the All Progressives Congress had plans to rig the election.

In return, the APC  GovernorDickson of planning to create mayhem in the state.
