EXCLUSIVE: See Akinkunmi’s Original Design Of The Nigerian Flag In 1959 (Photos)
Quite a lot of people are familiar with the green-white-green design of the Nigerian flag but only few are aware of the original design of the Nigerian flag presented by Taiwo Akinkunmi in 1959.As part of Naij.com’s fact finding mission to the abode of the Nigerian flag designer, this medium was able to get the original design.
Unlike the well-known green-white-green pattern, the earliest design had the image of a radiating sun imposed on the vertical bicolour triband of green, white and green.

Speaking with this medium, Taiwo Akinkunmi’s son, Akinwumi Akinkunmi explained that his father who was 23 years old and a student in London in 1959 participated in a competition to design the Nigerian flag.
He was studying Engineering at Norwood Technical College when he came across a newspaper advert calling on people to partake in a competition to design the Nigerian flag.
Akinkunmi was said to have mailed his submission to Lagos. Among other thousand of entries, Akinkumi’s design was chosen for its genuity.

This medium leant that the panel of judges modified the initial design by removing the image of the radiating sun.
He later invited by the London office of the Commissioner for Nigeria in the United Kingdom, where he was told that his green and white design had been selected.
Akinkunmi bagged cash prize of 100 pounds ($281) in 1959.
