One of the Almajiri schools established by the former president Goodluck Jonathan in Katsina state has now been turned into a cattle ranch where recovered stolen cows are kept.

The school located near Katsina army barracks on Jibia road was established to house Almajiri students and their teachers and to also help them learn religious and modern education and to stop them from wandering around, hawking, begging for alms and mendicancy.

A recent UN report shows that there are over 11 million out of school children in Nigeria – with over 70% from northern Nigeria, mainly Katsina and Kano.
Cattle poaching is taking a toll in some parts of Katsina West around Batsari local government area (Rugu Forest reserve). A report shows more than 10,000 cattle have been stolen since the beginning of this year.
Some of the people affected have since identified their animals and have claimed ownership, while many cows are still waiting to be identified.
The place is guarded by police.
