Why Buhari Should Appoint Youths As Ministers — Lawmaker
Following the recent nomination of prospective ministers announced at the Senate, a member of the House of Representative, Honourable Raphael Igbokwe, in Abuja on Wednesday, October 7, raised concern over the non-inclusion of young persons among the first list of nominees.
Igbokwe who is one of the lawmakers from Imo state on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party admonished the president Mohammadu Buhari-led administration to appoint young persons to ministerial positions, Vanguard reports.
He said: “With the recent announcement of ministerial nominees, we were taken aback that in the list so mentioned we have not seen any young person included there. We want to appeal to the government to consider getting more young people on board.
“Bringing them close makes them understand the workings of government and make them appreciate government better.

“And also it gives them opportunity to be heard and also contribute their quota. At the age of 18 years you can vote; yet at the same age, a person cannot be voted for. Citizens have to wait for a very long time before they can be eligible to hold public offices.”

However, the Imo lawmaker noted that it was unfair for the government not to include the youths to actively participate in politics because of their age.
Igbokwe urged the Nigerian government to endeavour to always encourage youths to participate actively in the processes of governing in order to prepare them for leadership roles in the future.
On another hand, the national chairman of Labour Party, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, wondered why President Buhari has not been able to fulfill the promise which he made to the Nigerian youths during the election campaign.
He said that with the nomination of no prospective ministers below the age of 35-year-old, the president has failed to address his promise to place youth at a high premium.
Meanwhile, a former minister of education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has severely censured President Muhammadu Buhari for what he called apparent romance with politicians who had contributed in destroying Nigeria for 16 years.
