Fayose Anointed As Leader Of Nigeria’s Opposition

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, who has been very critical of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, has added another feather to his cap.

He has been named the father of Nigeria’s opposition by the state House of Assembly.

The governor earned this new title as the state Assembly passed a vote of confidence in him. The motion for this pronouncement was moved by the leader of the Assembly, Olatunji Akinyele.

Akinyele stated that Fayose’s doggedness has enabled him to emerge as the lone opposition voice that has been giving the ruling All Progressives Congress a run for its money by frontally challenging the bad policies of the present administration.

Extolling the virtues of the governor, the Assembly leader said that Fayose is a lover of the masses, humble, articulate and consistent.

Akinyele said: “You would all agree with me, Speaker, members of Ekiti House and the royal fathers, that within one year in office, our amiable governor has been able to carry out many impactful projects and roads.

“He has, also been bold enough to construct a verification exercise that has stopped fraudulent and ghost workers, has brought peace to the state by providing adequate security for the people, and increased our IGR because of his hard work to develop the state in both human and material capacities and has been bold enough to speak against the dictatorial tendencies of the Federal Government at the national level. He deserves the honour and should, therefore, be pronounced as leader of the opposition.”

Responding to this Assembly’s pronouncement, Fayose said that he personally appreciated the title which is the opinion of the Assembly.

He added that this will spur him to speak when the ruling party runs foul of the law saying:  “We should all strive for the survival of this country first. Great leaders don’t talk about their political placement; they talk about their country’s placement, what the country would be at the appropriate time. But on the issue of what I stand for, and what I say in opposition to the ruling party, I have no apology. And with due respect, I have been like this from time immemorial. This country belongs to all of us.”

Meanwhile, the governor had  congratulated his predecessor, Kayode Fayemi, on his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari as a minister and advised him to work for commercial exploration of the abundant solid mineral resources in Ekiti state.
