Enrigue Iglesias: Sri Lankan president slams Colombo concert

While speaking at an event yesterday, Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena expressed his displeasure at the organisers of an Enrique Iglesias concert that took place in the country’s capital city of Colombo last week.
The president is said to have stated that the organisers of the event should be “whipped with toxic stingray tails” for the “uncivilized behavior” of the female fans who were seen tossing undergarments at the artiste.
The girls were said to have removed their undergarments and thrown it on stage at the artiste, while one girl reportedly climbed up on the stage and kissed the singer.

“I don’t advocate that these uncivilized women who removed their brassieres should be beaten with toxic stingray tails,” Sirisena is reported to have said, “but those who organized such an event should be. This is most uncivilized behavior that goes against our culture.”
The president, who like most in the country is a devout Buddhist, expressed his outrage at the behavior, stating that the concert had a negative impact on the local Sri Lankan culture and tradition.
“I need to say these things. As a Sinhalese Buddhist I cannot refrain from expressing my views. I will speak out when our traditions and culture is harmed,” he said.
He also expressed his displeasure at the free distribution of alcohol for those who had purchased the most expensive tickets which he said was a rip off at the prices they were sold which ranged from the equivalent of $35 to $250.
He further accused the local authorities of failing to make adequate inquiries concerning the event prior to approval of the concert and insisted that in future he himself will take the appropriate measures to ensure an event like that was not approved.
Adding that although people organized such events to make money, they failed to realize that money was not everything.
Enrique Iglesias is the biggest star to perform in Sri Lanka so far and the Spanish pop star performed at the CR & FC grounds as part of his ‘Sex and Love’ world tour. Two of the country’s own former top cricketers were among the organisers of the event.
