President Buhari’s Anti-corruption Gets UN Backing

The anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has received a major boost as the United Nations (UN) has pledged its support for the government’s cause. 

To underscore its seriousness, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, this weekend, sent a powerful delegation to meet with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) at his office in Abuja.

The delegation which was led by UN Special Envoy on ECOWAS, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, also expressed its readiness to support Nigeria in its quest to put an end to terrorism in the country.

According to a statement by the Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Justice‎, Mr Nwodo Charles, ‎Chambas said the UN will cooperate with Nigeria to strengthen the administration of justice, rule of law and respect for human rights in the country.

He stated that there was need for all African countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to form a common front against the menace of terrorism, especially with regards to the spreading activities of the Boko Haram ‎sect.

Parts of the statement read: ”While congratulating the Minister on behalf of United Nations on his appointment, he noted the land mark achievements resulting from the free, fair and credible elections that were recently conducted in Nigeria, this he said has brought progress to Africa’s nascent democracy.

”Dr. Chambas was optimistic that with the completion of the remaining 100km border posts, Boko Haram terrorists will be defeated”.

Responding, the minister said he was pleased with the level of success so far recorded by the Nigeria/Cameroon Joint Border Commission, in terms of resolving cross border disputes between the two countries.

He stated that the Muhammadu Buhari administration would be committed towards ensuring that unnecessary border disputes within the Lake Chad Basin areas are resolved amicably.

He informed the delegation that Nigeria is currently working with other countries on reforms and protocols that will ultimately, bring about everlasting peace in the West African region.

According to Vanguard, he assured them that the federal government is willing to further deepen the cordial relationship that had existed among the countries in the region.

Also speaking on the ongoing  anti-corruption war in Nigeria, the AGF said the administration of President Buhari would not relent on its effort to bring to book, anyone found to have economically sabotaged the nation.
