A group of Kenyan Muslims travelling on a bus ambushed by Islamic sect members protected Christian passengers.

The Somali based al-Shabab group is the main suspect for the recent attack in Kenya.

The BBC reports that the bus which was traveling from the capital Nairobi to the town of Mandera was ambushed on Monday, December 21.

The militants asked all the passengers to come down, and then they asked the Muslims to return into the bus while the Christians should stay back.

However, according to eyewitnesses, the passengers refused to be split into groups. They told members of the sect “to kill them together or leave them alone”.

“The locals showed a sense of patriotism and belonging to each other,” Mandera Governor Ali Roba said.

“The militants decided to leave after the passengers’ show of unity,” he added.

An employee of the Makkah bus company, who had spoken to the driver involved in the incident, confirmed that Muslims had refused to be separated from Christian passengers. He revealed that during the attack one person was shot dead while trying to run away from the militants after passengers had been forced off the bus.

Earlier this year, al-Shabab killed 148 people in an attack on Garissa University College. The militants also singled out Christians and shot them, but freed many Muslims.
