According to the commander of the ship Commodore David Adeniran in a statement the suspect who have been involved in this illegal would go to the extent of concealed illegally refined products in cellophane bags by cars or space bus, like Volkswagen Gulf or Toyota Sienna.

We have been able to obstruct the activities of these criminals despite choosing unconventional ways to move the AGO. The products are usually transported in small vehicles or buses and also drums ranging from 200 to 300 litres and above are also used in transporting these illegally refined products.

On September 1 (2015), we intercepted 75 drums of illegally refined AGO at Opobo waterside. Also on September 10, we seized 80 cellophane bags of AGO in a Nissan vehicle. This was handed over to the civil defence corps.

We also intercepted a truck loaded with 600 bags of illegally refined AGO. In this case, the product was packed like bags of rice. On looking at the products, you will think that you have bags of rice, but in actual sense, they are not.

They are illegally refined products and the smell easily gave them out before going into thorough examination of the liquid. We also seized 45 cellophane bags of illegally refined AGO at the Okop-Edi Fishing Town and 68 drums of AGO at Edmaya with two boats,” he said.

The commander further disclosed that the Nigerian navy have been able to control illegal activities in its environment especially Opobo, in Rivers State.
