Mandela’s grandson converts to Islam (photos)

One of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons, Mandla Mandela has just converted to Islam, in a bid to pick up a fourth wife.

The 42-year-old grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mandla Mandela, has been called out by members of the Congress of Traditional Leaders in South Africa (Contralesa),  for converting to Islam.

According to BBC, members of the Contralesa said being a Muslim could affect his ability to uphold their Xhosa traditions. The Contralesa’s spokesperson, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyane, said Mr Mandela’s new religious affiliation could pose a problem for his subjects.

“There is nothing wrong with a traditional leader following any faith he chooses but we are concerned about whether he will be able to continue performing his responsibilities as a chief.” he said.

Mandla who inherited his position as chief of Mvezo in the AbaThembu clan from his grandfather, is believed to have converted to Islam in order to marry his current wife, Rabia Clarke, a Muslim.

He got married to his first wife, Tando Mabunu-Mandela in 2004.

The two are reportedly still entangled in a nasty divorce battle.

He got married to his second wife, Anais Grimaud, a french teenager, in a traditional ceremony in 2010.

Their marriage was annulled after she reportedly had an affair with his younger brother.

Mandla took another wife after his marriage to his second wife was annulled. He married Nodiyala Mbali Makhathini, a Swazi princess, in 2011.

His third marriage was annulled by a court, after bigamy charges were opened by his first wife, Tando.

Mandla has now taken a fourth wife in 2016, Rabia Clarke. He had this to say about his marriage to her : “Although Rabia and I were raised in different cultural and religious traditions, our coming together reflects what we have in common: We are South Africans.”
