More trouble for new PDP chair: Sheriff under EFCC investigation
– The EFCC is still investigating new national chairman of the PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff
– Sheriff was picked a week ago, to take over from Uche Secondus, the former acting chairman
– A number of party members are still aggrieved with his appointment and have asked him to resign
It seems more trouble awaits the new national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said Sheriff is still under investigation for alleged corruption during his eight years as governor of Borno state, The Punch reports.
Speaking on Monday, February 22, in a telephone interview, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman of the anti-graft agency said: “Sheriff is still under investigation.”
He however, said he could not disclose the details of the investigations.
According to a reliable source within the anti-graft agency, Sheriff’s probe was a normal criminal investigation and not a witch-hunt.
“Criminal matters do not have statutes of limitation. If a crime took place 30 years ago, we can re-open it at any point in time and that is what is happening,” the source said.

The commission arrested Sheriff last year June for allegedly embezzling public funds while he was governor.
The former governor, who was detained from June 3 to June 4, 2015, was later released on administrative bail without being charged to court.
Sheriff was governor of Borno state from 2003 – 2011.
He was picked as the PDP national chairman last Tuesday, February 16, at the party’s national executive committee meeting in Abuja, a decision which has been greeted by strong criticism and opposition from some party members.
Some party members have called for his resignation but Sheriff is not willing to step down and has told his critics so.
Speaking yesterday, shortly after formally taking over from the former acting national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, Sheriff said those calling for his resignation were not as popular as himself.
He asked them to perish the thought as he was not going to vacate the position.
