Breaking: Boko Haram finally demands ransome for release of Chibok Girls
– Source close to insurgents says new demand had been made before now
– Adds that the federal government had received a secret video showing about 15 of the missing girls
– Says girls denied being raped or maltreated
The Telegraph reports that Boko Haram terrorists are ready to exchange the missing Chibok girls for about N10billion.
This latest development is coming just days before the second anniversary since the over 200 students of Chibok secondary school were kidnapped from their hostel in Borno state, northern Nigeria.
Sources close to the insurgents told The Sunday Telegraph that they issued the demand during secret contacts with President Muhammadu Buhari, who was reportedly willing to negotiate for the girls’ freedom.
The Telegraph quoted the anonymous source who is in close contacts with the terrorists to have said that the request was made about three months ago, when Boko Haram sent a message saying it would exchange the girls for a ransom of N10billion.
He said: “The ransom demand has split the government.
“Some think it would be worth it just to resolve the Chibok situation, but others say it will simply allow Boko Haram to hire yet more insurgent recruits.”
The unnamed source added that a month after the ransom demand, Boko Haram in a secret video, showed about 15 of the kidnapped girls within their stronghold.
“The girls are asked what their Christian names are and what their new Muslim names are. They are also asked if they have been raped or mistreated, but they say no – they look relaxed,” the source added.
