Nigerias current system is too corrupt – Adegbenro

– Chief Adegbenro says Nigeria should adopt a parliamentary system of government

– He says the current system allows for corruption

– He says Buhari is doing his best to fight corruption

Chief Niyi Adegbenro has said that Nigeria’s current system of government allows for corruption and needs to be changed.

The Punch reports that the son of a former premier of the old Western Region said during an interview in Abeokuta in Ogun state that the presidential system of government Nigeria was practising was too expensive and open to corruption.

He suggested that legislative positions should be a part-time job as this would produce politicians with ‘genuine intentions to serve the country as opposed to the majority of the current crop of politicians in power’.

Adegbenro noted that President Muhammadu Buhari was doing his best to curb corruption but wondered what would happen when Buhari left office.

He advised the current administration to organise a special conference or a referendum on parliamentary system of government.

He suggested that the country return to the parliamentary system of government it practised in the past.

“The parliamentary system of government is the best to reduce corruption. Buhari will do his bit but what happens when he leaves?

“So, I’m saying that there must be a special conference or a referendum to determine which system of government to be adopted in Nigeria.

“Presidential system of government is too expensive to run and it is prone to abuse. That is why we are confronted with stories of graft in the newspapers daily.”
