The term “First Lady” is not an official title, generally, it applies to the wife of the president.

However, in Nigeria it has received near-official status because funding and staff have been allocated to First Ladies since independence.

Shortly after Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election in the country, his wife Aisha surprised Nigerians by denouncing herself as the First Lady.

“I am not the First Lady, I am the wife of the president and will be addressed as such going forward,” she said.

Mrs Buhari noted that she would perform her duties and role as the wife of the president in a traditional way.

“Wives of presidents have some traditional roles, like receiving guests, visiting orphanages, helping the less privileged people.

“They also lead in the fight for the right of women and malnourished children, infant mortality rate, kidnapping and girl-child trafficking,’’ she said.

It has been a year since Mrs Buhari started performing her duties and responsibilities as the spouse of the chief executive.

She routinely donates relief materials to internally displaced people, visits orphanage and spends time with children deprived of parents’ love, takes part in summits and forums focused on improving the health and well-being of women.
