This UK-based Nigerian artist will impress you, check out his video
NAIJ.com contributor, Obey Olayinka recently caught up with fast rising UK based Nigerian artist Bimbi Phillips. He talks about the inspiration behind his music among others. Read excerpts from the interview below.
Who is Bimbi Philips?
I’m a Nigerian boy from a humble background; I have this immense love for music, creativity and theatrical arts. I have being doing this since way back and I’m proud to have taken it beyond the shores of the country, keeping it real and representing Naija everywhere I go.
Who or what inspired you to get into music?
I have been a huge fan of music since way back. I knew Nigerian music industry since the time it was brewing and I have being following it till date. In its earliest days, I was inspired by the likes of PlantashunBoiz and OJB Jezreel. I used to perform many of their songs when I was growing up. They had a lovely fan base back then in Nigeria.

Your new song, It’s Bimbi, is you introducing yourself to us; what inspired the song?
Yes, as a new act I’ve got to introduce myself to the huge fan base. It was aimed at ushering my music and art into the industry. It was inspired by my love for theatre, house music and most of all, afrobeats music.
If you could collaborate with any artist from Africa and the UK who would it be?
In the UK, I will go for Macklemore. I’m a big fan of his. He has been on top of his game for a while and his sound is just amazing. As for Africa, 2Face Idibia is the best act from the continent and I will jump at the opportunity of collaborating with him.
Are you currently working on any projects that we should watch out for?
Of course, yes. The video for It’s Bimbi is doing fine right now and I’m loving the rave review that is coming in with it. I’m currently working on improving my stage performance, getting shows and of course, new music is coming your way from Bimbi soon. Just watch the space.

What do you intend to achieve with your music?
I intend to motivate a whole lot of people out there with my music because I am a product of “try, try, try again” and never stop trying. I have put in a whole lot of energy and time to get to where I’m today and I’m not quitting just yet.
Dropping an album anytime soon?
Sure, that is the ultimate goal. However the release date has not been finalised. But for now more singles.
What is the biggest highlight of your career so far?
The career is still young, juicy and lanky. When you put out an effort and it gets wide acceptance from the people, you tend not to disappoint and raise the bar. BBC Radio has being playing my song which alone is huge already. But when top UK disk jockey, DJ TS7, who has worked with top artistes on the international scene remixed my song, I’m Bimbi, and injected his lines and version, I felt big and elated. That was the biggest thing that has happened to me. But I know much more is coming.
