There was confusion at the popular IBB Square in Makurdi, when Governor Samuel Ortom lied on the floor and cried profusely begging God to forgive the sins of the people of Benue state.

Speaking during a fasting and prayer galore, the governor noted that the agrarian state was facing numerous unsettled challenges and appealed for deliverance.

Leadership reports that the prayerful meeting was organized on Monday, May 30, by the state government in conjunction with the Christian Association of Nigeria to mark the celebration of Democracy Day in Benue state.

The ceremony was attended by men and women from all facets of life, including the deputy governor of the state, Benson Abounu, former minority leader in the 7th National Assembly, Senator George Akume.

Pastor Akpen Leva, the state chairman of CAN, stressed that the prayers became imperative because of the numerous challenges faced by Benue which needed to be eradicated through God’s intervention.

The ceremony was attended by men and women from all facets of life.

In his speech, Ortom said the people needed to toe the righteous path in order to overcome the economic and political challenges faced by the state.

The governor assured people of the state that the payment of salaries and allowances of workers remained the priority of his administration. However, he noted that the wages were being owed due to dwindling federal allocations. He added that the backlog would be cleared as soon as the economy improves.

Meanwhile, angry and disappointed workers refused to attend the ceremony over the non-payment of their salaries, saying they could not pray on empty stomach.

A civil servant who simply gave his name as John said: “Many of the workers have refused to attend the celebration because we are hungry and our salaries are not being paid.”
