German star reveals why he did not join Manchester United

Germany and Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels has disclosed his specific reason to stay at the Bundesliga, despite Manchester United showing interests.

The 27-year-old who has now joined Bayern Munich after again being linked with a move to Old Trafford was reportedly a target for United in 2014, when Louis van Gaal took over the club.

In an interview for Suddeutsche Zeitung Hummels admitted he was keen to try playing in England – or elsewhere in Europe – but he said that the lack of Champions League football among the clubs interested in him was too much to get over.

“Fundamentally, England, Spain and Germany were the relevant leagues I could see myself playing football in,” he said.

“But at this stage there just was not that one English club where the overall package was fitting. The overall package means: a club which fascinates me, a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season.

“And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was,” he said.

The paper’s interviewer then mentioned United specifically, and while Hummels didn’t explicitly name them nor did he correct what had been said.

The defended however cleared the air on stories that he has been approached by Arsenal. “I don’t have to beat about the bush, and pretend Arsenal wanted me,” he said.

“There was no offer. The same applies for Spain, there was always contact but no option right now. That’s why I now have made the fundamental decision to continue my career in Germany.”
