The Senate on Tuesday, June 14,  began consideration to alter the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, passing 13 bills for second reading in seven minutes.

The decision was taken on the floor of the Senate during plenary as it was referred to the committee on constitutional review chaired by Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president.

Some of them include a bill for an act to alter the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for other related matters, 2016 (SB.28), a bill for an act to alter the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for other related matters, 2016 (SB.130), a bill for an act to alter the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for other related matters, 2016 (SB.178) among others.

Although the details of the 13 bills are still sketchy as at the time of this report, the committee may decide to reel out the details during the public hearing.

The bills were sponsored by nine senators which include Babajide Omoworare representing Osun East senatorial district, Phillip Aduda representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rose Oko representing Cross River North senatorial district.

Others include Theodore Orji representing Abia Central senatorial district, Stella Oduah representing Anambra North senatorial district, Ibn Na’Allah representing Kebbi South senatorial district among others.

Some months back, Saraki asked the senate adhoc committee to submit its report on or before June 3o which he stated while delivering his address to welcome lawmakers from their yuletide break.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, alongside the Senate Leadership, inaugurated a Constitutional Review Committee on Wednesday, January 13.

The Committee was set up to review the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
