Opinion: These photos prove Nigerian soldiers give their best

Editor’s note: The issues raised in this article might seem minute in comparison to the many problems we face in Nigeria, unless we realize that the continued support we offer ourselves as citizens of this great nation is invaluable. Support from one another raises morale, which can help us stay strong despite the myriad problems plaguing our nation.

In the opinion of many, this pictures are hilarious and the techniques old-fashioned. Yet, is that really the case? Does the Nigerian military not deserve positive feedback for their efforts? Those are some questions that are tackled in this article.

Camouflage

Camouflage, which is the use of any combination of materials, coloration, or illumination for concealment, has always been a very important part of military training, and over time, camouflage has evolved.

Military camouflage was spurred by the increasing range and accuracy of firearms in the 19th century. As weapons became more sophisticated, camouflage became an important survival skill.

In the 20th century, military camouflage developed rapidly, especially during the First World War. From face paint, to disruptive patterns of military uniforms.

Recently, stealth technology has come into camouflage, using light bending techniques to make soldiers almost invisible. Therefore, when pictures of the Nigerian soldiers in camouflage training appeared online, many scoffed at the ‘old-fashioned’ technique been used.

The truth is: It is quite heartening to see the Nigerian soldiers engage in camouflage training in preparation to fight the insurgent Boko Haram, who have continually decimated the population, especially in the northern part of the country.

The camouflage they employed was quite in keeping with the terrain draping dry leaves over their uniform, that made them look like trees.

While some may feel that the pictures are hilarious or old fashioned, we need to look at the following points:

1. The Nigerian army has had a continued history of being poorly funded. Therefore we cannot criticize their methods, without looking at their funding, from the pictures, we see an army willing to fight despite the poor funding they have been receiving.

2. The camouflage in use, is free, easily available and quite efficient. As defined earlier above, the use of camouflage is to blend into the environment, and the camouflage we see in this pictures, do just that.

3. Lastly, the bravery of a group of people who continually fight for our safety cannot be easily laughed off. We should therefore while criticizing the improper things done, always praise the good in our country, especially by our brave soldiers.

Well done to the men of the Nigerian army. May they continue to put in their best in protecting the country in every part of it, and may we continue to support them.
