Poor infrastructure lowering living standard of Nigerians – Labour
NATIONAL Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, NUCFRLANMPE, has decried the poor state of infrastructure in the country, saying this was negatively affecting the standard of living of Nigerians.
In his valedictory speech, outgoing President of the union, Mr. Boniface Isok, while addressing guests and delegates at NUCFRANMPE 5th Quadrennial National Delegates conference, in Abuja, contended that non-availability of infrastructure had negative implication on the standard of living of most Nigerians.
According to Isok, only few people could pay for goods and services which should be provided by the government, thereby increasing the cost and lowering living standard of Nigerians.
“An average Nigerian presently is a government of his own. There is need for the government to provide all social amenities required to enhance the welfare of the citizenry,” he said.
Isok called on the government to ensure that power was generated and distributed to enhance industrilisation of the country, stressing, “Power is the basis for meaningful industrialisation. Any dependence on fuel-driven generation will mean overhead cost for manufacturers who will sell the final goods at high price.”
On secuity, he said that it was time for youths to be given more opportunities to employment and governance to reduce rising crime rate, saying “kidnapping, armed robbery and all forms of crime will not stop unless government provide jobs for the youths.”
The sophiscation at which kidnapping and robbery are done recently shows that the perpetrators are educated youths, no investor will invest in an unsecured environment.”
The outgoing President argued that the National Housing Fund, NHF, scheme should be restructured to favour workers in the private sector because the length of years workers had to contribute before accessing the fund was too long.
He called on law makers to disregard the proposed communication service tax bill which would only increase the suffering of the citizens.
