Marriage and career debate: Essence proves Wendy Williams’ wrong
by Anike Jacobs
We recently ran into Kennis music artiste, Essence, and we had an interesting conversation with her.
The sonorous singer with the hit number ‘Facebook love’ (rings a bell? ) in the conversaion explained why she has been off the music scene and why she is yet to be married.
YNaija: You’ve been silent for a while now, what have you been up to?
Essence: That’s because I’m re-branding, so I need to take out time to internalise. I’m still working in the studio though; I have a couple of songs in the works. When they’re ready, the videos will follow. Just expect new sounds and collaborations from me, but it’s still the quintessential Essence with that RnB feel.
Why are you not into musical collaborations, don’t you think it will help your brand?
E: I only write and do collaborations with people I can work it and that’s why it is only those in Kennis music. I wouldn’t want someone that would be problematic fo me so that when it is time to shoot a video for instance, you wont’ start telling me i am not in the country and we then we would have to start postponing etc. I would rather sing solo than work with artistes that i cannot control, artistes that are proud.
Recently, renowned tv host and presenter, Wendy Williams admonished young ladies not to rush into marriage at a young age. She told them to fous on building a career first in the twenties and then focus on marriage from 35, you agree with her? What is your take on the marriage and building a career debate?
E: You see Wendy Williams is so wrong. It’s not about building a career, it is about maturity. What is the essence of building a career and still not being matured for marriage?
The thing is, ladies should stop expecting their marrriages to be perfect as the ones we read about in the mills and boons because I have found out that is the reason why many of them rush into marriage at a young age.
Without being matured, you and your husband will begin to fight over mundane issues like ‘why didn’t you put the toilet seats back’, ‘why press the tooth paste from here’ etc and then these arguments will lead to constant fights and then the marriage crumbles.
But when you become matured, worked and built a name or brand for yourself, then you get married, then you have the capability to accept someone’s flaws. I have friends who married below 25 and they are telling me today that they wished they have waited before rushing into marriage. I am not saying one can not marry at a young age but i believe that when you are an older woman you would be more matured and you will stay longer in marriage.
